Only a 20 minuite drive from Roda Golf & Beach Resort is the impressive city of Cartagena with all its historical past.
Cartagena Port
Catagena is a deep water harbour and has been a working port since the 16th Century and became the headquarters of the Spanish Navies Maritime Department. It is in the Murcia province. It has the 1st submarine which is on show on the quayside. The port is very pretty and has many restaurants along the front.
Cartagena Amphitheatre
The theatre is an impressive achievement of the Romans and was carved into the hill side rock near the port has been dated to approximately 1 BC. It was excavated to generate the tiered bowl of an amphitheatre which would have held 6000 people. It was destroyed by a fire and its remains were built over it was not re-discovered until the 1980’s but since then it has been preserved and remains part of Catagenas heritage.
Cartagena Museum
Municipal Archaeological Museum - Was opened in 1982 and is the main centre of archaeological in Cartagena.
The museum stands on the site of the original Roman necropolis of San Antón, built at the end of the 4th century AD. The museum now contains some of the most important ancient inscriptions in Spain.
